A certification is not proof that you can do the work. It is proof that you finished something, which turns out to be a rarer signal than it should be.
Here is the direct answer. The five worth your time right now are Anthropic's Claude Certified Architect, OpenAI Certifications, the HubSpot Digital Marketing Certification, IBM SkillsBuild, and GitHub Foundations. Four cost nothing. The fifth costs $125 and, more importantly, currently requires your employer to be in Anthropic's partner network. That last detail is missing from every listicle I read while checking this, so it leads the post rather than hiding in a footnote.

It tests foundational knowledge across Claude Code, the Claude Agent SDK, the Claude API, and the Model Context Protocol, weighted across five technical domains. The framing Anthropic uses is worth noting: it validates that you can make informed decisions about tradeoffs in real implementations, not that you have memorised an API surface.
The programme now has four tracks: Claude Certified Associate - Foundations, Architect - Foundations, Architect - Professional, and Developer - Foundations. Exam codes vary between sources, so go by the track name rather than the abbreviation.
The catch nobody mentions. Certification is open to organisations in the Claude Partner Network, and registration requires a verified partner company email. If you are freelance, between jobs, or at a company that is not a partner, you cannot self-enrol today. The commonly repeated line that "some companies reimburse the exam cost" gets the barrier wrong: the barrier is affiliation, not money. What you can do right now is start the preparation courses on Anthropic Partner Academy, which are the genuinely useful part. General availability is widely expected later in 2026 at around $99, but Anthropic has confirmed no date.
2. OpenAI Certifications

In mid-June 2026 OpenAI opened three certificate courses to the public with no waitlist, no employer sponsorship, and no payment. Take them in order. AI Foundations covers large language models and the mechanics of a good instruction: adding context, reviewing outputs, using AI responsibly at work. Applied AI Foundations is the one that actually changes behaviour, because you bring a recurring task from your own job, decompose it, and build review checkpoints into it. Agents and Workflows is the newest and the most relevant to where the market is hiring.
This sits inside a much larger bet: OpenAI has stated a goal of certifying 10 million Americans by 2030. The separate proctored exam, backed by ETS and Pearson, is still confined to employer pilot programmes, so the certificate you get today is a completion certificate rather than a proctored credential. Be accurate about that on your resume.

AI can generate content. It cannot tell you who the content is for, why they should care, or where to put it. Positioning, messaging, distribution, and customer psychology are still the difference between a content engine and a content landfill, and this is the best free course covering them.
It runs across eight areas: content marketing, email, SEO, social, lead generation, contact management, inbound, and reporting. The lesson worth the price of admission on its own is Consumer Behaviour and Psychology in Digital Spaces. One honest caveat: positioning is not taught as a standalone module, so if that is your specific gap, treat this as coverage of distribution and psychology rather than positioning theory.

This is the entry on the list that is not a single certification but a catalogue, and that is exactly why it belongs here. IBM describes it as 100% free learning, with paths across AI, cybersecurity, data, and cloud, and IBM-branded digital credentials that employers can verify. Available in more than 20 languages.
Two formats, and the choice matters more than people expect. Guided learning experiences run on a fixed schedule with weekly plans and support, which is what you want if you have historically not finished online courses. Independent eLearning is on demand and self-paced. If you are trying to work out which technical career you actually want before committing money to a bootcamp, this is the cheapest possible way to sample several of them.
5. GitHub Foundations (GH-900)

Git and GitHub are no longer a developer-only skill. Every AI coding agent workflow runs through a repository, which means PMs, designers, and AI builders now spend their week in a tool they were never formally taught. This validates the fundamentals: Git and GitHub basics, repositories, collaboration, modern development practices, project management, and privacy, security, and administration.
Practical notes. It is proctored through Pearson VUE, so schedule it rather than assuming you can sit it on impulse. There is a free exam sandbox that lets you experience the interface and question types before booking, which is unusually generous and worth 20 minutes. Available in English, Spanish, Brazilian Portuguese, Korean, and Japanese. If you have a school or university email, check GitHub Education first, because verified students take it free.

What a Certificate Actually Does for You
Some plain talk, because the certification industry has an incentive to overstate this and I do not.
A certification is a filter, not a differentiator. It gets your resume past a keyword screen and signals that you finish structured things. It does not tell a hiring manager you can build anything. In an interview, the certificate buys you roughly the first ninety seconds. What you built, what broke, and what you changed buys the rest.
Beware the salary claims. You will see figures like "certified professionals earn 25 to 50 percent more" attached to these lists. Those numbers come from vendor marketing and self-selected surveys, and they confuse correlation with cause. People who complete certifications are already the people investing in their careers. The certificate is a symptom of that, not the cause of the raise.
Proctored beats completion, and both beat nothing. There is a real hierarchy here. GitHub Foundations and the Claude exams are proctored and closed book. The OpenAI and HubSpot certificates are completion-based. Both are worth having; only one of them survives a sceptical interviewer asking how it was invigilated. Do not blur the distinction on your profile, because it is the kind of thing that gets checked.
The certificate is the receipt for the learning. Nobody hires the receipt.
The Order I Would Actually Do These In
- 01Start with OpenAI's AI Foundations this week. Free, hours not weeks, no gatekeeper. It calibrates whether you enjoy this work before you spend anything.
- 02If you already build with agents or MCP, begin the Claude Certified Architect prep courses now, even though the exam is gated. The material is the asset. The badge is a bonus you may be able to collect later this year.
- 03Book GitHub Foundations with a date on the calendar. A proctored deadline is the only reliable way most people finish anything, and this is the one credential here that a sceptic cannot wave away.
- 04Run HubSpot Digital Marketing in the background over a weekend. It is 3 hours 24 minutes and it patches the gap that technical people most consistently have.
- 05Use IBM SkillsBuild as a sampler, not a commitment. Try three tracks for two hours each before you decide what to go deep on.
One closing thought on timing. Certifications from AI labs are new enough that the market has not yet decided what they are worth, which cuts both ways. Early credentials are cheap to get and carry scarcity value, and they can also age badly when the underlying product changes. The Claude programme did not exist eighteen months ago. Microsoft's Azure AI Fundamentals used to run on the AI-900 exam and now requires AI-901 instead. Build the skill, collect the badge on the way past, and do not organise your career around a credential that may be renamed before your next review.
